Will Marijuana ever be legalised in the UK?The UK is a massive producer of medical cannabis, which has, according to the UK government, no medicinal value. That is to say – it is grown under license to produce, you know…medicine, which apparently does have medicinal value for some pople, but none for British people, presumably something to do with exceptionalism. The profits of the medicinal cannabis industry line the pockets of, among others in government, Theresa May, via her husband’s financial interests. It is widely acknowledged that the reason for making cannabis illegal, way back when, was racism. So Theresa May is almost certainly religiously wedded to the idea it should remain illegal, because “foreigners”, even though it is a legal and profitable commercial industry in the Uk, producing something the non-exceptional acknowledge has a wide range of medicinal uses, with an astonishingly low incidence of negative side-effects.So, the Prime Minister makes money out of illegal snake-oil remedies (on her own terms), which at any other point in history would be make her an object of pillory, but is fine these days because the UK has gone bonkers.Yes, cannabis should be legalised in the UK. It has a wide range of proven medical uses, and the cost-benefit analysis; in terms of negative side effects to positive outcomes; is enough on it’s own to justify complete legalisation. Some profess concern about the high THC content of recreation cannabis, the existence of which is itself a lesson in the nock-on consequences of ill-thought-out legislation.Cannabis has consistently been shown to be less socially damaging than alcohol, a fact which surprised me, having groywn up in the long shadow of “Reefer Madness” propaganda. Cannabis with a high level of THC arguably is problematic, but eighteen year-olds tanking high-proof vodka isn’t an awesomely good idea, either. We allow ourselves open discussion and education around alcohol use and misuse, it’s a bit of a stretch to imagine that legalised cannabis will so instantly addle the brains of the whole population that reasoned discussion would be impossible. In any case, high THC recreational strains dominate because of criminalisation. It isn’t necessarily preferred. Prohibition of alcohol made high-proof alcohol a more viable risk to smugglers than beer, and who ever could have possibly foreseen that? (Cynical grimace.)I am not myself a cannabis user, but I take a great deal of interest in the topic, since learning how medicinal cannabis helped people who had previously been trapped in addiction to prescribed opiate pain-killers after injury (a problem I am familiar with). The illegality of cannabis, as positioned in the context of prescription opiates boggles the mind.Further reading revealed cannabis to be the most beneficial treatment for forms of intractable epilepsy, the current legal treatment for which is onerous, of high risk, limited success, and hugely costly in terms of medical supervision.I questioned my own prejudices, realised they had been founded on propaganda, and began to look more deeply into the culture of recreational use. Actually that sounds more deliberate than it was. Years ago, I was interested in making organic potting compost, as I had tons of horse manure, and where there’s muck..I happened on a long, highly detailed, and technical discourse on the topic of making organic potting compost. Annexes followed, detailing organic remedies for all types of horticultural mineral deficiencies, for countering pest outbreaks…fascinating stuff, and the word “detailing” is inadequate.I read eight pages of the article before I realised it was entirely concerned with the topic of stealth cannabis cultivation. All vestiges of lingering prejudice against cannabis use and users fell like scales from my eyes. What an amazing hobby! I’ve been gardening organically for decades, but these guys really know their stuff! Interestingly, one notes that many stealth growers do it because they don’t want high THC cannabis, just something for their insomnia or ptsd.Their forums (yes, I lurk, their gardening tips are brilliant), always extend to other things they got interested in growing, like chilli peppers. We live in an age when the traditional skills which foster autonomy are being actively crushed. Corporate-driven governments would have us unable to wipe our arses if they could flog us a gadget to do it instead. As someone who was decidedly anti- the legalisation of cannabis, for absolutely no reason other than unquestioning gullibility, I have changed my view to that of complete legalisation.Besides, I have a lot of old books on all sorts of topics, in including gardening manuals dating from pre-criminalisation to. . Cannabis is lauded as “fast-growing, easy to cultivate, with attractive, ornamental foliage, and exceedingly useful in the garden as an architectural feature or screening plant.”My garden is dull to the eye, and I fancy some fast-growing plants with architectural value, as hollyhocks don’t do well here.(Get over yourselves, it’s just a plant.)
