Let’s keep the conversation going! STEP TRICK THAT CALMS ANXIETY FAST
- GIVE YOUR ANXIETY A NAME
Anxiety is something you experience-it’s not your identity. Instead of saying, “I’m an anxious person,” try separating yourself from it. One powerful way to do this is by giving your anxiety a name, so it becomes something that visits you rather than something that defines you.
Some of my clients have called their anxiety everything from “the buzzing bee” to “the dark cloud.” Naming it helps create distance, making it easier to remember that anxiety comes and goes it doesn’t get to stay forever.
- ACKNOWLEDGE THE AFFECT ANXIETY HAS ON YOU. Identify how your anxiety affects the way you think, feel and behave. You could say to yourself “The buzzing bee makes me think everyone is judging me” or “The dark cloud tries to make me think the worst is going to happen.”
You might even prepare yourself by saying things like, “The dark cloud will likely try to show up before I go to the event.”
- IMAGINE YOURSELF ‘BEATING’ ANXIETY
Think of all the strategies you’ve used to beat anxiety. You might say things to yourself like “Im going to push the dark clouds away by exercising,” or “I can use breathing techniques to stop the buzzing bee.”
Externalizing your anxiety and thinking of it as something you can fight reminds you that you have a choice about how you respond to your emotions.
